This definitive book begins with the discovery of Uranus by Herschel in 1781, and goes on to detail the results of the Voyager missions - the author was a member of the Voyager Project. The results of the Voyager 2 encounter in 1986 included the discovery of Uranus' highly unusual magnetic field, its rotation period, the discovery of ten new satellites, two new rings and bizarre topography on the surface of the satellite Miranda. Since the First Edition in 1990, considerable changes in our understanding of Uranus have taken place. The new data collected by the Hubble Space Telescope has been included, and discussion of post-Voyager observations of Uranus has been considerably expanded, and includes all substantive findings since the first edition. |
