Since the first edition of this book was published, six years ago, the UK market for dietary supplements (food in unit dosage form, e.g. tablets, capsules and elixirs, taken to supplement the diet) has almost doubled. This book covers 72 commonly-available dietary supplements (from aloe vera to zinc), including vitamins, minerals, trace elements and other substances such as garlic, ginseng and fish oils. For each substance are listed: a description; nomenclature; units; constituents; human requirements; intakes; the role of the substance; dietary sources; metabolism ( absorption, transport, excretion); bioavailability; possible uses; precautions/contraindications; pregnancy and breast feeding; adverse effects; interactions; dose and useful references. |
