Review: Technological development requires materials that are stronger, able to withstand higher temperatures, and are more corrosion resistant, than existing materials. Significant improvements in properties can only be achieved by processing the materials in far-from-equilibrium (non-equilibrium) conditions. In the last few decades several new processing technologies have been developed, including rapid solidification, spray-forming, mechanical alloying, ion-mixing, vapour-deposition, laser-processing, and plasma-processing. All these methods are discussed in detail. There are also chapters on new types of materials which have been developed such as amorphous alloys and nanostructured materials. Each chapter, written by a recognised expert in the field, describes the principles, processing techniques, special features of the material produced and its applications. There are also references to help locate additional information on any specific aspects of any technique.
