This university-level test is devoted entirely to the observations of large-scale structures, and is written from an observer's perspective. The author first describes, beginning with the foundations laid by Sir Robert Herschel, how large-scale structures came to be recognized. Advances in technology bought about the greatly accelerated production of galaxy redshift, which led to the mapping of these structures. An Atlas Section is include in the centre of the book.
Deeper surveys and future plans are discussed, and large-scale motions (which are closely related to large-scale structures) are reviewed. The book also covers the mathematical tools and computer simulations that allow quantitative assessment and interpretation of the structures. Finally, the author seeks the origin of large-scale structures through an examination of the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background and the grotesque amplification of the inflationary epoch. |
